Connected Digital Photo Frames: Industry Report Validates CEIVA’s 9 Year Old Vision

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Connected SharedELECTRONICS.CA PUBLICATIONS, an electronics industry market research group, recently announced the availability of a new report they have compiled entitled “Wi-Fi Represents Strongest Opportunity in Global Connected Digital Photo Frame Market”.

According to the report, in the first half of 2009 prices for digital photo frames have dropped to affordable levels causing the  market for digital photo frames to take-off. However, due to the down turn in economic conditions and the trend to purchase digital photo frames as gifts, pre-loaded with personal pictures, most units purchased are still quite basic and lack advanced features such as connectivity to the Internet.

The report also states that it is expected that wireless-enabled internet connected photo frames will be a key growth sector and will grow at two times the rate of overall digital photo frames in 2010.

The report also goes on to make the following points:

• Worldwide unit shipments of all digital photo frames are expected to reach 50 million by 2013.

• Nearly 60% of US respondents to consumer survey identified integrated wireless connectivity as a desired feature on their next digital photo frame purchase.

• The total silicon opportunity for digital photo frame suppliers will exceed $550 million by 2013.

• Microcontrollers comprise the largest opportunity in non-wireless enabled devices.

• The BOM for a wireless 8-inch digital photo frame will fall below US$36 by 2013; the LCD, with the wireless module and the enclosure being the dominant cost items.

So while more frames will become connected to the internet, the industry still has yet to understand the value of having frames connected to each other. The importance of sharing photos easily across family & friends’ networked frames, via a secure sharing service such as CEIVA Picture Plan, is the primary reason why CEIVA owners value being “connected.”

SECRETS REVEALED! What Consumers Really Want in Digital Photo Frames

Monday, May 18th, 2009

crystal-ceivaRecently I was reading a blog where the author thought that it was almost magical how quickly digital photo frames have risen in popularity… which made me chuckle. What might seem to be an overnight sensation, I assure you, has been a long 9+ years of steady growth since CEIVA first introduced the digital picture frame to the world. Now our “crystal ball” which has served us well, reveals a secret as to just what will make digital frames even more popular with consumers in the future.

To foresee the future, it will help to look back at the past.

When digital cameras first hit the market they were interesting new novelties.  But soon digital camera owners began to realize that with each “click” there was a free picture that could be kept, or deleted. Gone were the days where one would have to wait and pay to see if the picture was a good one.  “Free” pictures made it easy for the digital camera to rise in popularity over the traditional film camera. However, while more pictures were being taken, most were not being seen. Pictures were and still are just stored away on a computer as data files.

Then a little while later… abracadabra! cell phones with built-in cameras appeared. These types of digital cameras added to the ease and opportunity for picture taking. Finally, it seemed as if everyone was taking digital photos with more and more wanting quick, convenient and inexpensive way to display them.

During the rise of the digital camera, we here at CEIVA were producing our magical digital photo frames that revolutionized and defined the industry. In fact, for many years after we first introduce our frames, we pretty much were the ONLY company manufacturing them.

But those days are over. Now it seems, with each new day, a new digital frame magically appears in the market; while “POOF” another frame manufacturer goes out of business, but not before offering their frame at “bargain” super discounted price.

All this hocus pocus makes for a tough market. To remain competitive, and snag any share of the market, manufacturers crank out all sorts of cheap mini gadget “monitors.”  In the rush to get anything that will display an image they miss that first and foremost what they are producing is a picture frame… that happens to be digital.  They focus more on the techno gadget and never consider what pictures mean to the people taking them.

Right from the start, CEIVA has never lost sight of what pictures meant to people. Pictures, be they paper or digital, are moments of our lives that we want to show and share. Showing our photos in a traditional frame has always been easy. Sharing, unless you had extra prints made, was a bit more difficult. That is where our crystal ball comes in.

From the beginning we here at CEIVA saw only a digital future that allowed for both showing AND sharing.  And while most digital frame manufactures still only consider the showing side of pictures, CEIVA saw that technology could also transform the way we shared our pictures. Frames, for the first time could, be that gateway technology that allowed for sharing. So from the start we “built in” a functionality that makes our frames different from all others… that functionality is the ability to SHARE pictures from frame to frame, no matter WHERE the frames are located.

So if you were looking for a quality frame that shows and SHARES your cherished photo, then your future looks bright with a CEIVA.

Select any photo on your iPhone and send it straight to your CEIVA frame with CEIVA Snap

iPhones are all the rage. With what seems to be hundreds of new Apps being released each day its no wonder these phones are so popular.

We here at CEIVA love the iPhone. Its design and simplicity, like so many Apple products, is an inspiration to us.

So when we can build bridges between our products and Apple’s, we do so without hesitations.

Take a look at CEIVA Snap, our iPhone “bridge” application that lets you snap pictures and then instantly and directly send them to your own frame or CEIVA frames owned by your friends and family.

The CEIVA Snap app, which is FREE, allows you to take a picture from right within the app and then send to any CEIVA digital photo frame you have access to or to any album you have set up on your CEIVA account.  A copy of the picture, taken through CEIVA Snap, will still reside in your iPhone too… just in case you want to show on the go.

Taking and sharing pictures using cell phones just got easier. In fact, CEIVA’s iPhone app is so easy you might say that it’s a… “CEIVA Snap.”

Fingerprints on Your Frame…Shame on You

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

These days there’s a lot of talk about digital frames with touch-screen menus.

Fingerprints on your favorite photos is no way to enjoy them

Here’s the one fundamental problem with touch-screen frames: They’re a lot like stainless steel appliances — they seem great until you realize they show every fingerprint. With a touch-screen frame, you’ll touch the display over and over again in order to use the menu, which means you’ll have dozens of fingerprints on your frame.

Would you put your fingerprints all over the surface of a printed photo? Of course not and for good reason—it wrecks the photo and your ability to enjoy it. You would hold a photo from the edges to keep it smudge-free. So if you’ve got a digital frame with a touch-screen menu and you want to enjoy your photos free of fingerprints, you’ll have to clean the display all the time. We think that’s a big hassle.

We also understand that over time some touch-screens lose sensitivity to your touch, making it more and more and difficult to navigate. That’s why we offer either easy-to-use remote controls or on-frame buttons that won’t put messy fingerprints all over your pictures.

Some Digtal Frames Are Freakish Distortions… 4:3 Aspect Ratio Matters

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Now you may be wondering, “What on earth is 4:3?” Don’t worry—we’re not asking you to do any math.

4:3 is the most common aspect image viewing ratio of photography. Unless you have an “odd” camera it is your cameras image ratio. It is an INDUSTRY STANDARD used by the vast majority of digital cameras. So if your camera is  offering picture sizes like 1280×960, 1800×1200, and 2048×1536… then it is a 4:3 ratio camera.  So if you want your digital photos displayed on your digital frame without any STEEEEEEERECHED distortion, you’ll want a digital picture frame that also offers 4:3.

While it is not standard for many digital frames on the market display in the 16:9 ratio, which means they WILL distort your photos.

Most photos are taken at 4:3 ratio, so your digital photo frame should display them that way, too.

Most photos are taken at 4:3 ratio, so your digital photo frame should display them that way, too.

To make sure your photos are displayed properly CEIVA offers  8-Inch Digital Photo Frames™ that have the 4:3 aspect ratio. We guarantee  which means that your photos are displayed perfectly. That’s our True-to-Photo™ image technology at work. If you load your photos onto other frames that don’t feature 4:3, your photos will appear stretched out, cropped off or awkwardly squished.

We think you should enjoy your photos just as you took them—without any distortion.
